Cataract Surgery

Cataracts, or clouding of the eye’s natural lens due to an alteration in protein structure, happen to many of us, with more than half of people 80-years or older having cataracts or having had surgery to remove them, according to the National Eye Institute. Aspen Valley Hospital is proud to offer some of the most advanced cataract surgery options in the Mountain West. In addition to multifocal lenses and toric lenses, our expert ophthalmology team now provides patients with implantable light adjustable lenses in cataract surgery. Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®) by RxSight optimizes precision and the opportunity to fine-tune vision post-surgery, leading to remarkable patient outcomes and enhanced vision. Studies have shown patients who received the Light Adjustable Lens were almost twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision or better without glasses (compared to patients who have standard lens implants).

What is a Cataract?

Clouding of the natural eye lens due to cataracts can distort or block light from being able to enter the eye and focus light on the retina. Images become fuzzy, headlights start to become bothersome at night, and life generally becomes less colorful.

What Causes Cataracts?

Age is a large factor in the development of cataracts. Around 40 years of age, the protein cells in the lens of the eye start to break down. By age 60, a physician can usually tell the lens is starting to cloud, and cataracts are forming. Regardless of how active one is, cataracts can still form, and vision quality can deteriorate.

How Do You Treat Cataracts?

The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery. However, this is only necessary once cataract symptoms become bothersome. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription can help, but patients should consider surgery when cataracts begin to impair daily life. Fortunately, there are a variety of effective cataract surgery options at Aspen Valley Hospital, including Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®) by RxSight.

About Cataract Surgery

How is cataract surgery performed?

Cataract surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, performed under local or topical anesthesia. Your physician will break up and remove the cloudy lens through a tiny incision at the edge of the cornea and then insert an intraocular lens (IOL) to replace your eye’s natural lens.

What can you expect after cataract surgery?

Most cataract surgical procedures are performed without complications and result in immediate improvement in vision. You will apply eye drops for several weeks following surgery to reduce the possibility of infection and/or inflammation of the eye. You may need glasses to obtain your clearest vision following surgery.

In a small number of cases, the natural capsule supporting the IOL can become cloudy after cataract surgery. When this happens, a posterior capsulotomy laser surgery opens the capsule and restores clear vision.

What is the process for light adjustable lens cataract surgery?

This process begins with preoperative testing to determine if you qualify for the procedure. Patients who opt for the light adjustable lenses can expect more follow-up visits after surgery to adjust the lenses, but with the reward of truly optimized vision. During your post operative visits, you and your doctor work together to achieve the visual outcome that is best for you and your lifestyle.

State-of-the-Art Cataract Surgery Technology

Aspen Valley Hospital offers patients leading-edge cataract surgery technologies, including:

Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®) by RxSight

This is the first and only lens that can be customized after cataract surgery. Unlike fixed lenses, this unique option allows you and your doctor to make adjustments to your vision after surgery, allowing you to live with the changes and determine what best suits your lifestyle.

According to RxSight, the Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special photosensitive material that changes the shape and power of your implanted lens in response to ultraviolet (UV) light to optimize your vision. The Light Delivery Device (LDD) delivers this UV light noninvasively to precisely reshape your lens based on the visual correction needed to target your custom prescription.

Alco Centurion Phaco Machine

This powerful ophthalmologic tool provides superior performance through its engineering. It helps enhance the operating room experience for both patient and surgeon. The Alco Centurion Phaco Machine also enhances the surgeon’s control for the most efficient cataract removal, which eases the process and increases the safety of the surgery.

Luxor Ophthalmic Microscope

The improved ergonomic design of the Luxor Ophthalmic Microscope provides superior visualization of the eye, expanded visual field for the physician, increased depth of focus, and excellent visual detail and contrast.
